Horses and "pigeon fever"?

I have a 5-6 year old Appendix gelding, and he now might have pigeon fever. I went to the stable today, took off his blanket, and started brushing off all dry sweat left over from Thursday. I went to brush his stomache(where the girth/cinch goes) and he sucked up his stomach and flinched away. I got my trainer, and they said it can be Pigeon Fever. They are now moving him to a stall away from all of the horses. Has anyone had a horse with Pigeon Fever?? If so, how long did it take for it to go away, and whatever else I need to know?? The vet will be coming out soon, but I would at least like to know how everyone else delt with it. Thankss!
