Where was "god" when?.....?

Three years ago my wife fell pregnant for the first time.Late-pregnancy we were told there were"complications".The long and short of it is our unborn daughter had a very rare incurable syndrome that meant she was unlikely to go full term,and if she did then would only live for a matter of hours/days and be in unbearable pain.Also if we carried on with the pregnancy then my wife's health would be at risk.We took the grim decision to abort,with all the unpleasantness that goes with a late-term abortion.Everyone kept telling me they were praying for us.Why,(if god is real) did he do nothing,and put us in that situation in the first place?
